““Hired the Porsche 911 GT3 RS for a Kirkistown track day. The drive through the Ards Peninsula was a brilliant warm-up, and the car on track was sensational — the fast corners at Kirkistown suit the GT3 RS perfectly. Delivered to my door in Armagh at 07:00.””
, — Mark, Armagh, BT61Kirkistown is Northern Ireland’s only permanent race circuit, located approximately 80 miles east of Armagh near Portaferry in County Down. The 1.5-mile (2.4 km) circuit is a fast, flowing track that rewards driver confidence. Originally a wartime airfield, the circuit’s flat terrain and fast corners create a different challenge from hillier circuits like Knockhill. The McLaren 720S’s mid-engine balance and aerodynamic efficiency are particularly effective on Kirkistown’s flowing layout.
The 80-mile journey from Armagh to Kirkistown via the M1, A7, and A20 through the Ards Peninsula takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. The route passes through Lisburn and Downpatrick before following the eastern coast of Strangford Lough — an area of outstanding natural beauty. Many clients combine the track day with an overnight in the Ards Peninsula or at the Slieve Donard Hotel in Newcastle for a two-day driving and circuit experience.
Armagh’s location allows a unique combination: self-drive on the Mourne Coastal Route on day one, track day at Kirkistown on day two. A two-day hire in a Porsche 911 GT3 RS covers mountain roads and racing circuit in a single weekend, from £2,400 with multi-day discount. The varied terrain between Armagh’s drumlins, the Mournes, and Kirkistown’s flat circuit provides complete driving diversity.

““Booked three cars for a corporate track day — McLaren 720S, Ferrari F8, and Porsche 911 Turbo S. Convoy from Armagh to Kirkistown through Downpatrick. Our clients were genuinely impressed. The pre-circuit briefing at the paddock was professional and thorough.””
Kirkistown Circuit sits on the eastern tip of the Ards Peninsula in County Down, 80 miles east of Armagh. The most direct route follows the M1 east to Lisburn, the A7 south to Downpatrick, and the A25/A2 around the coast to Portaferry. The journey takes 1 hour 30 minutes in normal conditions.
The circuit’s 1.5-mile layout features fast, flowing corners on a flat former airfield. The key challenges: the fast right-hander at the Colonial complex, the braking zone into the chicane, and the long straight allowing 150+ mph in the McLaren 720S and Ferrari F8 Tributo. The flat terrain means weight transfer is less extreme than hillier circuits, favouring power and aerodynamic efficiency.
For clients extending the trip, the Ards Peninsula offers overnight accommodation at Portaferry Hotel (adjacent to the circuit area) or the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa in Newcastle (30 miles south, at the foot of the Mourne Mountains). Both provide luxury overnight options before returning to Armagh the following day.
