Winter Supercar Hire: Tips for Cold-Weather Driving

Supercars Do Not Hibernate

There is a common assumption that supercars belong to summer. But some of the most rewarding driving experiences happen between November and March — quieter roads, dramatic winter light, and the thrill of a powerful car on a crisp, cold morning.

Tyre Considerations

Below 7°C, standard summer performance tyres lose significant grip as the compound hardens. Most reputable hire companies switch their fleet to winter or all-season tyres during the colder months, but confirm this at booking.

The difference in braking distance on a cold, damp B-road is substantial — up to 30% longer stopping distances with summer tyres.

Cold Start Procedures

  • Let the engine idle for 60 to 90 seconds before driving
  • Drive gently for the first 10 to 15 minutes — keep revs below 3,500 RPM
  • Do not blip the throttle while stationary — it sounds exciting but does nothing useful on a cold engine

The Best Winter Supercars

Lamborghini Huracán — AWD system provides reassuring stability on cold, damp surfaces.

Porsche 911 Turbo S — All-wheel drive, rear-engine traction, arguably the most usable supercar in any weather.

Bentley Continental GT — Heated everything, AWD, and enough presence to make a grey January day feel special.

Aston Martin DB11 — Rear-wheel drive but the weight, long wheelbase and sophisticated traction control make it surprisingly composed.

Reduced Grip Awareness

  • Smooth inputs — gentle steering, progressive braking, gradual throttle
  • Increased following distances — at least double your normal gap
  • Avoid painted road markings and manhole covers in the wet
  • Use the car's driving modes — most supercars have a wet or comfort mode

Shorter Daylight Planning

In December and January, you lose daylight by 4pm. The best winter driving happens between 10am and 3pm. Map out a route that heads west or south to keep the sun ahead of you.

The Winter Advantage

Winter hire rates are often 15 to 20% lower than peak summer prices, availability is significantly better, and the roads are blissfully empty. A winter supercar hire can be the most memorable driving experience of your year.
