The ultimate Lake District challenge from Manchester Airport. M6 north to Ambleside, then west via Little Langdale to Wrynose Pass (1 in 4 gradient). Descend to Cockley Beck, then Hardknott Pass climbs at 30% with hairpins and a Roman fort at the summit. Not for the faint-hearted but bucket-list worthy. Continue to Ravenglass on the coast, return via Windermere. Full day required.

M6 to Windermere, north along the lake to Ambleside and Grasmere (Wordsworth country). Continue to Keswick beneath Skiddaw, then west to Buttermere via Honister Pass. Return via Whinlatter Pass and the western lakes. Stunning scenery throughout, more accessible than Hardknott but still engaging. Perfect for convertibles on sunny days. 5-6 hours with stops.

Northeast via M62 to Skipton, gateway to the Dales. North through Grassington to Aysgarth Falls, then the spectacular Buttertubs Pass to Hawes. Return via Ribblehead Viaduct (Instagram essential) and Settle. Market towns, limestone scenery, and some of England's finest countryside.
