“"Hired the Ferrari F8 Tributo for a Saturday run from Scarborough to Whitby along the A171. Left from our hotel on South Bay at 7.30am, through Burniston and up onto the clifftop — the view from Ravenscar with the sea below and the moors behind you is extraordinary. The V8 sounds incredible echoing off the hedgerows above Cloughton. We had breakfast in Whitby and drove back through Goathland on the moors. Unforgettable morning."”
, — David, visiting Scarborough, YO11The A171 north from Scarborough to Whitby is one of the most spectacular coastal driving roads in England. Climbing out of Scarborough through Burniston and Cloughton, the road follows the clifftop edge of the North York Moors National Park with views across Robin Hood's Bay and the North Sea stretching to the horizon. The 20-mile stretch threads through Ravenscar — a clifftop village 600 feet above sea level — before descending into Whitby through Hawsker. A Ferrari F8 Tributo rewards disciplined driving here: the mid-range torque through second and third gear on the ascent out of Cloughton, the sweeping left-hander above Ravenscar with the sea on your right, and the controlled descent into Whitby harbour make this route the reason most Scarborough clients book with us. Best driven on weekday mornings before the coastal traffic builds.
The A170 west from Scarborough passes through Forge Valley — a narrow wooded gorge carved by the River Derwent — before opening onto the North York Moors plateau towards Pickering (18 miles) and Helmsley (30 miles). Beyond Helmsley, the road reaches Sutton Bank, a 1-in-4 escarpment with views across the Vale of York that the Royal Society once voted the finest in England. The Lamborghini Huracan Evo's all-wheel drive and variable dynamics make it the most engaging car for this route, handling the tight Forge Valley bends with precision before stretching its legs on the open moorland road to Helmsley. The full Scarborough-Helmsley-Sutton Bank circuit covers 65 miles and is comfortably achieved in a morning.
The A165 south from Scarborough follows the coast through Cayton Bay to Filey (8 miles), with the option to continue to Flamborough Head (18 miles) — a chalk headland jutting into the North Sea with a lighthouse and dramatic cliff formations. The road runs through open farmland above the coast, with long sightlines and flowing bends. The McLaren 720S, with its carbon-fibre tub and hydraulically linked suspension, handles the gentle undulations with composure. Flamborough Head itself provides a striking turning point for a coastal loop, returning via the B1253 through Burton Agnes and the A64 back to Scarborough — a 50-mile circuit through the Yorkshire Wolds.

The full Scarborough-Pickering-Helmsley-Sutton Bank circuit (65 miles) is achievable in a single day. Clients hire a Porsche 911 Turbo S for the Saturday, depart at 8am through Forge Valley, tackle Sutton Bank before lunch in Helmsley, and return via Kirkbymoorside by late afternoon.
Birthday and milestone celebrations
30th, 40th, and 50th birthdays make up a significant share of Scarborough bookings. A Lamborghini Huracan Evo collected from your hotel on South Bay with a photo stop at Scarborough Castle headland is a recurring arrangement — followed by a day on the A171 or through the moors.
Couples' coastal getaways
The Aston Martin DB11 is the most requested car for couples visiting Scarborough. A weekend combining the A171 to Robin Hood's Bay, lunch in Whitby, and dinner at Hackness Grange — with the GT comfort of the Aston Martin on the return — captures the best of the Yorkshire coast.

“"Booked the Aston Martin DB11 for our wedding anniversary weekend in Scarborough. Delivered to the Grand Hotel with a full walkthrough. We drove to Helmsley via Forge Valley, over Sutton Bank, and back through Pickering. The DB11 is the perfect grand tourer for these roads — fast when you want it, comfortable for the longer stretches. The best anniversary present I could have arranged."”
“"My son hired the McLaren 720S for my 60th birthday. Collected from our cottage in Scalby, drove down to Flamborough Head and back along the coast. I've lived near Scarborough for thirty years and never seen those roads from behind the wheel of anything like a McLaren. Genuinely thrilling."”
The standout route from Scarborough is the A171 north to Whitby. Leave Scarborough via the Scalby Road, climbing through Burniston and Cloughton as the road lifts onto the clifftop above the North Sea. The 20-mile stretch passes through Ravenscar and along the edge of Fylingdales Moor before descending through Hawsker into Whitby. On clear mornings, the visibility from Ravenscar extends 30 miles along the coast — a panorama that makes stopping at the Ravenscar viewpoint irresistible. The return via the inland route through Goathland and the A169 through Sleights adds variety, with moorland roads replacing the coastal drama.
For the Dalby Forest Drive, head west from Scarborough on the A170 through East Ayton to Thornton-le-Dale (10 miles), then follow the forest drive signs north into the heart of the North York Moors. The Dalby Forest toll road (7 miles) winds through mixed woodland with dappled light filtering through the canopy — a different experience entirely from the open coastal roads. Beyond Dalby, the road connects to Hackness and the Forge Valley, completing a 30-mile loop back to Scarborough through some of the most varied scenery in North Yorkshire.
The A64 west from Scarborough provides the fast route to York (42 miles, 50 minutes) via Malton, but the more rewarding drive follows the A170 through Pickering and Helmsley. Helmsley Castle and the walled garden at Helmsley Walled Garden provide a civilised stopping point before the dramatic descent of Sutton Bank — a road so steep that caravans are prohibited. The Porsche 911 Turbo S handles Sutton Bank's 1-in-4 gradient with confidence, its rear-mounted engine providing traction on the steepest section.
Scarborough's nearest airports are Leeds Bradford Airport (75 miles west, approximately 90 minutes via the A64 and A1(M)) and Teesside International Airport (55 miles north-west, approximately 70 minutes via the A171 and A174). We arrange collection and return at both for clients flying in specifically for a North Yorkshire coastal or moorland driving experience. Nearby cities include York (42 miles south-west), Middlesbrough (50 miles north-west), and Hull (42 miles south).
