LuxuryCarHire.Club offers vintage and classic car hire in Wells, Somerset — England's smallest city. Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, Bentley S-Series, Jaguar E-Type, and Austin-Healey 3000 delivered to Wells Cathedral, The Swan Hotel, and venues across the Mendip Hills.
Our Wells vintage collection includes the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III (from £895/day), Bentley S3 Continental (from £850/day), Jaguar E-Type Series 1 Roadster (from £795/day), Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III (from £695/day), Aston Martin DB5 (from £1,200/day), and Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster (from £1,500/day). Each car is maintained to concours standard with full RAC breakdown cover.
The Jaguar E-Type in Opalescent Silver Grey is our most photographed car in Wells — the contrast of 1960s British engineering against the 12th-century Cathedral facade creates images that define this city. Chauffeur-driven or self-drive options on all models.
For those seeking a more intimate driving experience, the Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III in Colorado Red offers a raw, mechanical connection to the road that modern sports cars cannot replicate. The straight-six engine note through the Mendip valleys is unmistakable. The Aston Martin DB5, finished in Silver Birch, carries the weight of its heritage without ostentation — a car that suits the refined character of Wells. Multi-day bookings on any model attract a 5% discount for two days, 10% for three to four days, and 15% for five days or more.
“"The Jaguar E-Type through Cheddar Gorge was extraordinary — the sound bouncing off the limestone walls with the roof down. Collected from The Swan Hotel in Wells and returned grinning."”
, — David H., Bristol, Day Hire
Wells Cathedral Close is one of England's finest medieval precincts — a cobbled square flanked by the Cathedral, the Bishop's Palace, and Vicar's Close (the oldest continuously occupied residential street in Europe). We coordinate directly with the Cathedral events office for vehicle positioning on the west front. A Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud arriving through the Cathedral Green archway is Wells at its most timeless. The Penniless Porch, the arched gateway between the Market Place and Cathedral Green, frames the Cathedral's west front with its 300 medieval sculptures. Our chauffeurs position vehicles on the south side of the Green, where natural light falls across the stonework throughout the afternoon — the preferred angle for wedding photographers working with couples at the Cathedral.

The B3135 through Cheddar Gorge — named Britain's best driving road — begins 6 miles west of Wells. An open-top Jaguar E-Type or Austin-Healey 3000 through the gorge's 22 bends and 138-metre cliffs is motoring at its most visceral. The route continues across the Mendip plateau through Priddy to panoramic views over the Somerset Levels. Beyond Cheddar, the Mendip plateau opens into wide grazing land dotted with ancient barrows and lead-mining remains. The road through Charterhouse and across Black Down (325 metres, the highest point on the Mendips) is empty on weekdays and rewards an unhurried pace. The Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster, with its firm suspension and direct steering, handles the undulating terrain with composure. From Priddy, the lane descending to Ebbor Gorge offers views across the Somerset Levels to Glastonbury Tor — a natural stopping point before returning to Wells via the Old Bristol Road.

Wells has no congestion, no Clean Air Zone, and no restricted access. The city centre is compact enough to walk in fifteen minutes, yet the surrounding countryside offers miles of quiet lanes through Wookey Hole, Westbury-sub-Mendip, and the villages beneath the Mendip escarpment. Vintage cars belong here — the pace matches perfectly. The lanes south of Wells run through Dulcote, Dinder, and Croscombe — three villages connected by single-track roads beneath high hedgerows. These are the quietest driving roads in the district, rarely carrying more than local traffic. A Bentley S3 Continental at thirty miles per hour through Dinder, past the 13th-century church of St Michael, captures a particular quality of English countryside motoring that busier counties cannot offer.

Wells Cathedral hosts weddings throughout the year. A Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III positioned on the west front with the Cathedral's sculpted facade above is the defining arrival. We handle timing coordination with the vergers. Reception venues within easy reach of the Cathedral include The Swan Hotel (adjacent to the Cathedral Green), Stoberry House (1 mile south, with gardens overlooking the Cathedral), and The Bishop's Palace itself for larger receptions. Farther afield, Ston Easton Park (8 miles north-east) and Babington House (14 miles east) are both within comfortable vintage car driving distance for the bridal transfer.
Mendip Touring Days
Spring and summer day hires through Cheddar Gorge, across the Mendips to Priddy, and back via Wookey Hole. The Austin-Healey 3000 and Jaguar E-Type are built for these roads.
Bishop's Palace Events
The Bishop's Palace hosts garden festivals, concerts, and private events throughout the year. The moated approach — across the drawbridge with resident swans — suits a Bentley S3 Continental arrival.
Wells Food Festival
October's Wells Food Festival fills the Market Place with 200+ stalls. A vintage car displayed on the Cathedral Green during the festival draws serious attention and enquiries.
Film and Television Production
Wells Cathedral and its surroundings have served as locations for numerous productions, including Hot Fuzz and episodes of Poldark. The medieval streetscape requires no set dressing to pass as period-accurate. Our vintage fleet supports production transport and on-screen vehicle requirements — the Aston Martin DB5 and Jaguar E-Type are the most frequently requested for camera work in the Wells area.

“"The Jaguar E-Type through Cheddar Gorge was extraordinary — the sound bouncing off the limestone walls with the roof down. Collected from The Swan Hotel in Wells and returned grinning."”
“"Our Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud outside Wells Cathedral was exactly what we'd imagined. The car belonged against that medieval stonework. The chauffeur knew exactly where to position for photographs."”
B3135 Cheddar Gorge (6 miles west)
England's largest gorge — 3 miles of twisting road beneath 138-metre limestone cliffs. Twenty-two bends at 30mph through the gorge floor. An Austin-Healey 3000 with the hood down echoing off the cliff walls is one of Somerset's great driving experiences. Continue west to Axbridge and the A38.
At the western end of the gorge, the village of Cheddar sits beneath the cliffs. From there, the B3151 runs north-west through Wedmore — an elevated ridge village with views across the Levels — to Burnham-on-Sea (16 miles from Wells), where the seafront provides a coastal contrast to the inland gorge driving. The round trip via Cheddar Gorge, Wedmore, and the A39 back through Glastonbury covers approximately 40 miles and takes a comfortable two hours with stops.
A39 Wells to Glastonbury (6 miles south)
A gentle six-mile drive across the Somerset Levels to Glastonbury Tor. The road runs straight through flat farmland — Glastonbury Tor visible from departure. A Bentley S3 arriving at The Crossways hotel with Glastonbury Tor rising behind completes the picture.
In Glastonbury itself, the High Street leads past the entrance to Glastonbury Abbey — the largest and richest medieval monastery in England before the Dissolution. The George Hotel and Pilgrims Inn, both on the High Street, are 15th-century coaching inns that suit vintage car arrivals. From Glastonbury, the A361 continues south-west to Street (8 miles from Wells), home to Clarks Village, and on to Somerton (14 miles), Somerset's ancient capital.
B3139 Wells to Bath (22 miles north-east)
Through Chewton Mendip and Farrington Gurney across the northern Mendips. Rolling countryside, stone villages, dry-stone walls. Forty minutes connecting England's smallest city to one of its most elegant. A Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud makes this journey in period-appropriate style.
Wookey Hole Lane (2 miles north-west)
A narrow Somerset lane through woodland to Wookey Hole village. The caves and mill provide a dramatic turning point. Short enough for a wedding photography detour — twenty minutes round trip from the Cathedral.
Wells to Frome via Shepton Mallet (18 miles east)
The A371 east from Wells reaches Shepton Mallet in 5 miles — a market town with a fine 15th-century church and the Kilver Court gardens. From Shepton Mallet, the A361 continues to Frome (13 miles further), where the independent shops and restaurants of Catherine Hill provide a cultured stopping point. The Jaguar E-Type suits this route particularly well — the A371 has long straight sections between the towns, with good visibility and smooth surfaces.
Airport: Bristol Airport (BRS) is 18 miles west — 25-minute transfer. Classic car airport collection available. Exeter Airport (EXT) is 55 miles south-west, approximately 75 minutes via the A38 and M5.
The same arrangement, across 124 cities.
