Aberdeen’s unique granite architecture and dramatic coastal settings provide photographic backdrops found nowhere else in the UK.
Aberdeen’s silver granite reflects light differently throughout the day — warm tones at golden hour, cool silver at midday, dramatic shadows in the afternoon. Marischal College on Broad Street offers 120 metres of Gothic granite facade, making it one of the most visually striking buildings in Scotland. The Granite Mile along Union Street provides a consistent architectural character that reads as wealth and heritage in every frame.
Dunnottar Castle perched on 160 ft cliffs above the North Sea provides the most dramatic contrast setting in Scotland. A red Ferrari against weathered stone and crashing waves creates imagery that transcends conventional car photography. The approach road offers elevated angles with castle and sea in a single frame.
King’s College campus with its 15th-century crown tower, cobbled streets, and St Machar’s Cathedral provides period-rich settings within walking distance. The university buildings photograph well with both modern supercars (contrast of eras) and vintage vehicles (period continuity). Dawn shoots on the empty cobbles are exceptional.
Aberdeen Harbour provides working maritime settings. Balmedie Beach offers sand dunes and empty coastline. Stonehaven Bay combines harbour, beach, and clifftop in a single location. All within 20 miles of the city centre, reducing unit moves between setups.
Marischal College, Broad Street: The world’s second-largest granite building. The Gothic facade’s silver granite provides a 120-metre frontage that photographs dramatically at every time of day. The forecourt accommodates multiple vehicles. Early morning access (before 08:00) avoids pedestrian traffic and provides clean backgrounds. The pinnacles and tracery create depth behind parked vehicles.
Union Street — the Granite Mile: Aberdeen’s main thoroughfare runs east-west, providing consistent light direction throughout the day. The Victorian and Edwardian granite frontages create a unified architectural backdrop. The junction with Belmont Street offers additional angles with the Triple Kirks spire as a vertical element.
Old Aberdeen, King’s College: Cobbled High Street, 15th-century crown tower, and medieval university buildings. Dawn shoots (05:00–07:00 in summer) on the empty cobbles with a Rolls-Royce Ghost or Aston Martin DB11 produce editorial-quality imagery. The Chanonry adjacent to St Machar’s Cathedral provides tree-lined perspectives.
Dunnottar Castle, Stonehaven: 20 miles south on 160 ft cliffs. The approach footpath provides elevated angles over the castle and sea. Vehicle positioning on the cliff-edge car park requires coordination with Historic Environment Scotland. Afternoon light from the south-west illuminates the castle ruins against a dark sea.
Aberdeen Harbour and Beach Esplanade: The harbour provides working maritime backdrops with fishing vessels and warehouse architecture. The Beach Esplanade runs 2 miles north with Art Deco features and sea views. Balmedie Country Park (8 miles north) offers empty dune and beach settings.
Automotive editorial: Magazine and online automotive publications shooting supercars against Aberdeen’s granite architecture. The Ferrari F8 Tributo at Marischal College and the Lamborghini Huracan Evo on Old Aberdeen’s cobbles are recurring setups.
Brand campaigns: Luxury goods, fashion, and lifestyle brands using Aberdeen’s distinctive granite character as a backdrop that signifies wealth, heritage, and northern sophistication. Watch brands, whisky labels, and fashion houses favour the Granite Mile and Dunnottar Castle settings.
Wedding and portrait photography: Couples and individuals booking a supercar for styled portrait sessions at Marischal College, Duthie Park Winter Gardens, or the West End terraces. The Rolls-Royce Ghost and Bentley Continental GTC are most requested for portrait work.
Social media and influencer content: Content creators booking hourly sessions for Instagram and YouTube content. The Lamborghini Aventador S on Union Street at dawn or the McLaren 720S on the Beach Esplanade produce high-engagement content.
“Shot the Ferrari F8 Tributo at Marischal College at 06:30 on a June morning. The granite facade in early light with the red car in the forecourt — the client used it as their hero image for a year. The handler had the car immaculate between every setup.” — Photographer, Aberdeen
“Booked the Rolls-Royce Ghost Black Badge for a whisky brand campaign at Dunnottar Castle. The contrast of black car, grey stone, and blue sea was exactly what the brief required. LuxuryCarHire.Club handled the HES access and had the vehicle positioned before our team arrived.” — Art Director, Edinburgh agency
