Why Armagh Works for Production

Georgian Architecture — Period Authenticity
Georgian Architecture — Period Authenticity

Armagh’s Georgian quarter, centred on The Mall, was designed by architect Francis Johnston in the late 18th century. The tree-lined green flanked by limestone terraces, the Courthouse (1809), and the Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum provide a Georgian set piece that reads as period wealth and establishment on screen. A Rolls-Royce Ghost or Bentley Continental GT against these facades produces imagery with genuine historical character.

Navan Fort — Ancient Landscape
Navan Fort — Ancient Landscape

Navan Fort (Emain Macha), 2 miles west of Armagh, was the ancient capital of the kings of Ulster for over 700 years. The large circular earthwork on its hilltop provides a dramatic archaeological landscape for period and contemporary productions. The open, elevated setting offers panoramic backgrounds without modern intrusions.

Slieve Gullion Forest — Woodland Drama
Slieve Gullion Forest — Woodland Drama

The 8-mile Slieve Gullion Forest Drive through the Ring of Gullion AONB provides dense woodland, mountain views, and an ancient volcanic landscape. The forest drive’s tight curves and dappled light create atmospheric production settings suited to thriller, drama, and commercial genres.

  • Armagh’s production infrastructure is limited compared to Belfast (40 miles northeast), which houses major studios and established production services. However, Armagh provides unique visual settings not available in Belfast, with accommodation at Armagh City Hotel and the Charlemont Arms for small-to-medium crews. Belfast’s infrastructure is accessible for support services while shooting on location in Armagh.

Production Types We Support in Armagh

Heritage brands, food producers (Armagh’s PGI Bramley apples feature in food marketing), and lifestyle companies use the Georgian architecture and orchard landscapes for campaigns with rural sophistication. The Bentley Continental GT against The Mall’s Georgian facades is a natural brief.

Television drama

Northern Ireland’s established screen industry (supported by Northern Ireland Screen) occasionally requires locations outside Belfast. Armagh’s Georgian quarter and ecclesiastical settings support period and contemporary drama production. We supply vehicles matched to era and character requirements.

Music video and fashion

Navan Fort, The Mall, and the apple orchards in blossom (April–May) provide three distinct visual worlds within 10 miles. The Lamborghini Aventador S on the forest drive or the Rolls-Royce Ghost on The Mall create striking imagery.

Documentary and heritage

Armagh’s significance as the ecclesiastical capital of all Ireland and the ancient capital of Ulster generates documentary interest. We supply appropriate vehicles for contemporary sequences within historical documentary frameworks.

Production Locations in Armagh

The primary urban locations for vehicle photography and filming in Armagh are concentrated around The Mall. The Georgian terraces provide a 200-metre frontage of limestone facades from the 1790s. The Courthouse at the northern end and the former Archbishop’s Palace (now the Council offices) at the southern end frame the green space. Early morning access (before 08:00) provides empty backgrounds suitable for period and contemporary setups.

Both St Patrick’s Cathedrals offer contrasting architectural styles — the Church of Ireland cathedral (medieval foundation, restored 1834) and the Catholic cathedral (Romano-Romanesque, completed 1873) provide ecclesiastical settings on opposing hilltops with the city between them.

Navan Fort, 2 miles west, provides an open archaeological landscape with a large circular earthwork visible from multiple angles. The hilltop setting offers 360-degree views without modern structures in frame. Access is via a single-track road that can accommodate production vehicles with advance planning.

The Slieve Gullion Forest Drive (30 minutes south via A28) provides 8 miles of forest road with dense canopy sections, open mountain views, and a volcanic landscape. The forest’s Courtyard visitor centre can serve as a unit base for location work.
