““Shot the Rolls-Royce Ghost on Cathedral Close at golden hour. The three spires behind the car, the sandstone glowing — there is no other location in England that gives you this composition. Coordinator handled all positioning.””
, — Automotive photographer, West Midlands
Lichfield Cathedral is the only medieval cathedral in England with three spires. Cathedral Close provides a semi-pedestrianised setting where a supercar can be positioned against the west front without traffic interference. The three spires create a vertical composition element that no other English city can offer. Morning light from the east illuminates the sandstone facade — golden hour from the west silhouettes the spires dramatically.

Cannock Chase AONB — 5 miles west — offers 26 square miles of open heathland, birch woodland, and elevated viewpoints. The contrast between a Rosso Corsa Ferrari and purple heather (August–September) is exceptional. Autumn bracken colour peaks in October. The Chase’s elevated positions allow panoramic shots with the vehicle against the Staffordshire skyline.

Swinfen Hall Hotel sits in 100 acres of parkland 2 miles south of Lichfield. The Georgian facade, sweeping gravel approach, and mature tree-lined drive provide a country estate setting. A Rolls-Royce Ghost on the gravel forecourt with the hall behind is a classic luxury automotive composition. Access by arrangement with the hotel.

Within 10 miles of Lichfield: Cathedral Close with the three spires (city centre), Market Square Georgian facades (city centre), Cannock Chase AONB heathland and woodland (5 miles west), Swinfen Hall parkland (2 miles south), Wall Roman Letocetum site (2 miles south), Trent Valley riverside at Alrewas (5 miles east), and Hoar Cross Hall formal gardens (10 miles northeast).
Light quality: Lichfield sits at 52°N latitude. Winter golden hours (November–February) are 3:30–4:00pm, producing low-angled light that creates dramatic shadows on vehicle bodywork. Summer golden hours extend to 8:30–9:00pm, allowing evening shoots with warm light. The cathedral’s sandstone responds particularly well to low-angled golden hour light.
